Preserving History in Sudbury Town Center
The Sudbury Grange Hall was originally built in 1848 as a simple one-story schoolhouse and was later expanded by raising the main structure to the second floor and building a level below. In 1890, the Town of Sudbury sold the building to the Sudbury Grange #121 and it became the center of Sudbury agricultural life. For over a century, residents have gathered there for companionship, political discussion and education.

In 2006, the Sudbury Foundation acquired ownership of the historic property and began a comprehensive renovation project that included modernization of the original 2,000 square foot building and a 1,200 square foot, two-story addition. Improvements and additions incorporate a new kitchen, an elevator, ADA-accessible bathrooms, a two-story staircase and HVAC systems. Many of the Greek revival style period details have been refinished and restored including 12-over-12 double-hung windows, punched tin ceilings, wainscoting and a ventilation hood. The new addition, attached to the rear of the original Grange Hall, mirrors the original building’s design and details. Salvaged fieldstone from the grounds was repurposed in the site landscaping. A historic preservation restriction has been placed on the property.

The first floor now houses the Sudbury Foundation office, the first permanent home for the 54-year-old foundation. The second floor will be used by the Sudbury Grange and as public meeting space for Town committees and local nonprofit organizations.

The Grange Hall restoration project reunites Latady Design Associates and Chapman Construction/Design who partnered on several other historic projects including the First Parish Church of Sudbury.

“The project fits perfectly with the Foundation’s charitable goal of building community and preserving community character,” said Richard H. Davison, the Foundation’s chairman of the board. “We’re pleased to be able to protect and carefully restore this wonderful gem of a building located in the heart of Town Center, and to offer a secure home for Sudbury’s longstanding Grange organization. It’s been a great collaborative effort.”

Restored, maintained and accessible to the public, the renovated Grange Hall will be an aesthetic, historic and community asset for the both the Grange and the Town.
